Originally the land of the O'Flaherty Clan, Lords of Connaught, Ballynahinch has been home to many famous and colourful incumbents, including Grace O'Malley in the 1500's (The Pirate Queen of Connaught); Richard "Humanity Dick" Martin in the 1800's and the Maharajah Ranjitsinji in the early 1900's. The Ballynahinch estate is beautifully situated - surrounded by lakes, rivers, mountains and trees in abundance. Exclusive and private, yet accessible, it is only an hour's drive from Galway city centre. In the early 18th century, a castle was built by the Martins on Ballynahinch Estate. It subsequently became a barracks, and was home to senior estate workers in the days of the Maharajah.
